The Baltic Fleet, Liverpool

The Baltic Fleet stands at 33A Wapping, across from Liverpool’s Albert Dock. Historic England dates the Grade II listed public house to 1860, while the pub describes its origins as 1850s. Its distinctive wedge-shaped site gives it a ‘flat-iron’ plan, and the building remains a reminder of the dock road’s busy maritime past.

The pub has long been associated with stories of tunnels, smugglers and press gangs. CAMRA notes that tunnels in the cellar have prompted speculation about those tales; their alleged uses should be treated as local lore. Inside, the nautical setting and cask ale selection retain the feel of a traditional waterfront pub. On my visit I drank Lune Brew’s LB306 The Trionda, 3.8%.
